The name of the city itself likely comes from the Shuswap word "Tk'əmlúps", which means "meeting of the waters" or 'where the rivers meet"
An alternative origin for the name comes from the French "camp des loups" meaning "Camp of Wolves", owing to a legend regarding a white wolf.

Communities typically moved with the seasonal changes, relocating to take advantage of hunting, fishing and food gathering opportunities.
In the winter, they stayed in fixed areas and constructed pit house villages.
