Modern ones are safe. The old-school ones had no pressure relief valve so they tend to go boom!

I have 2 vintage pressure cookers I've used for decades. One from the 1940's and one from the early 1960's. They both have a pressure release valves. That being said, if the lid or valve is not on correctly this can happen.

I looked into it more and it was the type of pressure valves they used that was faulty and went boom! So they did have them like you said, just not very good ones. The one Sears sold came with a 17-page safety manual. 17 pages for a kitchen appliance!
