You have 5 dogs and two of them go over to their friend's house for a play date. How many dogs stayed home?

Either all five go with me or we don't go at all. :-)

The rest of the dogs were tired so they wanted to stay home and take a nap. They want you to take the other two dogs on the play date so they don't bother them during their nap. Are you really going to deprive the tired dogs of their nap (and how many of them are there)?

I can't speak for all dogs but I can tell you that if one of my dogs is awake, they are all awake.

We could also say there were 5 dogs at your house for a play date, two were your dogs and the rest were their friends that were visiting, how many dogs were visiting?

The problem with that, though, is that children have more trouble when they can't visualize the dogs being physically separated.

Now that is a believable word problem.
