I am impressed with the spiritual practice in Islam of practicing charity throughout the year as well as during Ramadan. There are so many in need, so many deserving charities and causes. that I am hesitant -- and really unclear whether it would be proper -- to approach the Islamic center near him.

No, don't be hesitant. Go for it!

In Islam we're not allowed to turn our backs on anyone who asks us for help regardless of faith. We should help if we can. Mosques have the resources especially money through charities to help the community. Also I learned some Synagogues in Toronto do the same

I wish more people in the West had a better understanding of other faith traditions.

If the sun hasn't risen yet in Toronto. enjoy your breakfast. I know there's a specific word for that me, but I forget what it is.
