I think the book was banned/challenged because it deals with difficult topics that some people will not face. It's a banned/challenged book in schools in my state because the governor wants to weaken public education in favor of private schools.

Reading the book lets you pause to absorb events and lets you re-read bits. It allows you to control the pace.
