In response to Jo Brodie.
It's often claimed that the QWERTY layout was invented to slow typists down and/or to prevent lever jams. This is #DeceivedWisdom . The layout was designed so that digraphs, for instance (letters commonly used together) would be hit by opposite hands so that typists could work faster not slower.
