Before Tennessee expelled two Black legislators today, Georgia refused to seat a Black legislator in 1965 because he opposed the Vietnam war. The Supreme Court told Georgia they were violating Julian Bond's 1st Amendment rights. https://joycevance.substac...

I was in junior high in Inglewood, California that year living on the West side of Crenshaw, with my Southern grandma's "We don't use *'s around here.." in one ear, and frustrated East sider friends at school giving me attitude in the other.

"I don't blame you for being so mad ", I told them.

Thank you for writing this piece, Tennessee, I enjoyed reading about Mr. Bond and how his case applies to what we all just witnessed.

Republicans often yell about First Amendment rights. Today the Tennessee House made it abundantly clear they don't think it applies to black Legislators.

A case must be brought to them. The Court doesn’t just step in to intervene on their own, it’s not their role. However, the plight of these two legislators could end up being decided there.
