Believe it or not, our state of Tennessee used to be a fairly solid Democratic state. I asked an older Republican one time what changed. In his opinion it changed when Al Gore, Sr. came out for civil rights for our black neighbors. I think he was correct.

Tennessee government has a tradition of dodgy behavior. In the 1970s then-Gov Ray Blanton caught several kinds of hell when he sent state-owned 18 wheelers to Colorado to stock up on Coors beer for consumption at his discretion.

LBJ said it best, "the Civil rights act will lose us the South for 3 generations." That was 1968 so X was toddlers. Then it was Millennials and Gen Z. So it's up to Gen Alpha (born 2010-2025) to decide which direction they want the South to move in.
