Ethics training is quite common. Ethics are important to most work, marriages, golf, and even playing board games. Clarence Thomas is very well aware. Stating he was advised differently is just insulting.

As a government employee, I was required to take ethics training on a regular basis. It was made clear to me that I couldn't accept gifts - not so much as a pencil or a box of cookies.

They didn't cover yacht cruises.

I worked for a private university. A student tried to give me a box of chocolates for going above and beyond for her on something. I told her I couldn't accept gifts, so she sat down across from my desk, opened the box, and ate one. "There, now we're just sharing a box of chocolates," she said.

I was also offered a box of chocolate for helping someone. After consulting with my supervisor, it ended up on a table for anyone in the office who would like a bit of chocolate.
