Maybe, just maybe there ought to be a law that elected officials cannot change their political party affiliation until their term in office has ended.
Doing so, should result in forfeiture of their seat.

A good starting premise, but Manchin and Sinema are perfect examples that labels don't matter. What matters is pre-election deep vetting. A more effective law would be that if someone changes their affiliation and views after the election, they forfeit their seat and a new election is held.
