I was reading adult books in 5th grade with adult permission on my card. Every time I went to the library the librarians checked that I still had permission to read adult books. My parents knew exactly what I was reading. Instead of closing libraries parents need to parent.

I read Michener’s Hawaii @ 11. There was sex in it. It was icky & I skipped it.

I read Jaws @ 14. There was sex in it. I read those pages over & over, but it didn’t make me want to go out & have sex. It also didn’t scar me for life.

We’re prudes in the USA. But sure we can give a gun to a 12 y

I read Greek Mythology, Classics, Murder Mysteries, Biographies, Horror, and Romance. I did a lot of skipping too. Mom refused to explain anything I didn't understand. Her standard answer to a Q was look it up. We had a full set of Encyclopedias and a dictionary in the bookcase.

Exactly. I remember seeing Cabernet when I was 12. It was about a singer in a sexy club.

At 16, it was about a singer who got pregnant I think? And she maybe wasn’t sure who the father was?

At 25, it was about a weird ménage’a tois with a backdrop of facism.

People only take what they understand.
