For example, MCDM's Kingdoms & Warfare focuses on standing armies you build over time, boosted by temporary alliances but largely handwaiving the resource details.

Kevin Crawford's Wolves of God shows the small scale of warfare in Dark Ages Britain by having strict limits on how many ceorls you can raise from your lands, how long they fight before returining home to farm, and even how quickly they gather.
