"Native plants don’t need the same nutrient-rich commercial potting soil as non-native plants, and they grow without herbicides and pesticides. Many are perennial, meaning they don’t need to be replanted every year."

I started planting native shrubs, trees, and perennials about 10 years ago. They really do need a lot less work from me and offer food and shelter for lots of wildlife.

This is especially true for areas affected by drought, and drought tolerant plants.

One should really only grow, out in nature, the native plants and eat food grown in your area and use the wood from your area.
