Meritocracy has become, sadly, about wealth, power, and connections. If you don't have at least two of three, your merit rarely matters.

We do have a semi oligarchy. People buy elections..and apparently judges.

It doesn’t offer an alternative though. So if not #meritocracy - what then?

Aristocracy?
Nepotism?
Oligarchic rule?

It seems the ones criticising meritocracy want mediocrity.

If it’s not a level playing field, what kind of field is it? Wealth, power and connections?

The problem with meritocracy is a) what happens to the people who aren't deemed to have merit, and b) who determines what is meritorious?

Capitalism uses monetary wealth as a measure of merit. If you're not wealthy, you're just a resource, and if you can't make someone money, you're lower than dirt

In response to Anton Brakhage.
You are absolutely right - meritocracy without concern for others doesn't get you anywhere
