You know things are really bad when today's news about Human Rights violations for so many of us look like pages out of a history book. On a very deep level, reading "Slavery by Another Name" reflects MAGA strategy today. See thread.

I think a great many people, have a singular perspective of slavery. You hear it often when America's early slavery is defended with, "There was slavery in Africa" or "There has always been slavery".

No. Not all enslavement has been alike. E.g. my family was still in the fields, after the Civil War

Yes 👏 This issue needs to be addressed on multiple fronts; from helping to prevent initial incarceration to providing training to reduce recidivism.

Very true. In the book, the author explores how completely innocent people were jailed then sold to reproduce unpaid labor after emancipation. Imagine laws that imprisoned black people for not having jobs after emancipation, then having fines they couldn't pay increasing their time?

See article for more details. I highly recommend this book. This is one among countless reasons some seek to ban books. Knowledge is power!
