It used to be normal for the House of Representatives to expand.

It wasn’t until 1929 that Congress arbitrarily capped the size of the House at 435 members.

Back then, each House member represented roughly 200,000 people.

Today, that number is 760,000.

Expand the House.

Unless they're elected by PR you don't get better representation by increasing the number of representatives, you just get more noise.

Interesting. Can you recommend sources of further info on this for further reading?

435 Reps? That is crazy. We have 338 MPs in Canada to represent our population of only about 40M (1 per 118,000).

In theory this sounds great. When I think about the current make up of the house with a capped number today, I cringe at the thought of expansion. How about we legislate out gerrymandering first?

My dad, Dr George L Willis, published the same in the Cleveland Plain Dealer in 1985. That’s almost 40 years ago.

until we can fix all the gerrymandering that's in place now, i'm not sure this is a good idea. You could argue that will more reps, there's less chance for gerrymandered districts, but they will find a way...
