In 1968, Michener served as a presidential elector in Pennsylvania. What he witnessed that fall disturbed him so much he wrote this book:

We had lived in Texas for a year ... and struggled to understand the entire electoral system in US.
That book was illuminating, then, and still is.

I first read about the Electoral College in my old Canadian law book, when I was 18 years old. I was agast. I remember thinking what a strange system it was.
