Went to public school in late 60s thru mid 70s. I learned about racism, but not nearly enough about it. Learned about slavery, of course. I witnessed voter suppression, Freedom Rides, desegregation in real time. Did I feel bad about what white people did to non-white people? Of course I did.

But it did not destroy me. For one thing, while that was happening here, my ancestors were being oppressed in Europe and later, murdered by the Nazis. But I still felt bad about what white people had done. I used that as motivation to be part of positive change, to try to stop bigotry and hatred.

If a child is upset by learning what white people did to non-white people, the parent should talk to the children and help them understand that it is up to all of us to fix these problems. Be motivated by the past to have a better future.
