I’ve looked this up 100 times, and the answer was always the same. But today, everyone is waffling on it, saying it’s totally optional.

Back in the day, you treated the ellipsis like a word: w/ a space before and after. But now I’m seeing every permutation.

I also learned it this way, but have long preferred no spaces at all.

That's interesting. I've never seen it or used it that way. Also, in every auto-correct program I've seen in the last (mumble mumble) years, it corrects to three periods, no spaces.
