A quick observation I’ve made as a healthcare provider, about something I’ll call the ‘paradox of empathy’. As an HCP practicing in a very red state, I see a lot of patients who are the self described ‘MAGA’ types where extreme selfishness is not only encouraged but centered in their ideology. 1/

Zero sum belief that if they aren’t the ones exploiting someone, they themselves must be the ones being exploited. A core principle for them is to never extend empathy. Yet, if during their visit with me I empathize with a condition they are dealing with, 2/

they are immediately disarmed and appreciate, if not crave said empathy. So even though they refuse to offer it and won’t let others have it, they are compelled to respond positively when they receive it. 3/

So I’m curious as to why humans are so prone to refuse to offer empathy even though we all intrinsically crave and appreciate it. It’s such an odd and sadly destructive phenomenon. More specifically how do we fix this? /end
