During his childhood Zakir Hussain heard a haunting musical piece. He couldn't figure out its genesis. As an adult, in Scotland, he heard that exact music, which turned out to be Celtic. He learnt that Scotts in the British Army had picked it up during their postings in the North Eastern Frontier.

That's when it struck me how there is nothing like music as a medium to bring different cultures together.

Musicians are perhaps the most open minded folks who embrace something that is not culturally their own for the pure joy it brings to the player and the listener.

Does food do the same? Food is a utility; and while cooks may embrace a different ingredient into their repertoire, great food does not quite soothe the soul like great music does; which makes the acceptance of another culture more deep rooted, if only within the scope of that medium (music).
