The system failed.him and those Subway riders. I live in Chicago; at least once a week, someone is sleeping on the CTA, freaking out, or living with an untreated mental illness. That's called living in a city. So far they have been left alone or given money. No one cares about each other anymore.

You're not wrong. Society perceives the homeless as the lowest of the low. As much as I hate to say it, I shared a meme here on Spoutible in late Feb on homelessness and no one seemed to care. So even here where we are mostly empathetic people, there is a perception that homelessness is taboo.

Anyone can become unhoused at any time. Too many think they are immune. We are only.one.lost job and one disaster away from losing our home. People overall don't like tp examine mortality or vulnerability.
