I don’t understand the US system of politicians appointing judges. Does any other country do this? How did anyone ever think that was a good idea?

It depends on the position. Judges at the state and local level are usually elected. Federal judges are appointed. The biggest problem are the SCOTUS justices, who are put in "for life" as a way of giving the President who appointed them a legacy beyond their own term.
