TURTLE ISLAND
The name, Turtle Island, comes from the First Nations peoples. The story varies among Native communities, but by most accounts, it acts as a creation story that places emphasis on the turtle as a symbol of life and death.

This is one such origin story. The turtle's back is a significant symbol used in many Native cultures. Not only does it represent the creation of Turtle Island, also known as the continent of North America

a closer look will reveal a pattern of thirteen individual segments on its back which represents each moon of the cycle of seasons. The outer, and lower ring of the shell contains 28 segments which represents the 28 days between each new moon.

The outer, and lower ring of the shell contains 28 segments which represents the 28 days between each new moon. Native groups have names for the thirteen moons and there are stories to go with each moon.
The Mexica and Maya based their calendar system on these thirteen segments.

In various Native origin stories, the turtle is said to support the world, and is an icon of life itself. Turtle Island, therefore, speaks to various spiritual beliefs about creation, and for some, the turtle is a marker of identity, culture, autonomy, and a deeply held respect for the environment.
