Any doctor who refuses to treat a patient on the basis of religious beliefs has violated his oath of office and should lose his license to practice medicine.

It's not the word oath I took issue with. It's office. That implies an elected position. Doctors are not elected. I do believe they should take their oath seriously either way. In fact, I've often advocated for nurses to take a similar Hippocratic oath.
