It was dark the afternoon Emraethar the Destroyer touched our earth for the first time, the day The Destroyer came to live with the Giants.

Storms, mightier as they were in the ancient times, contorted the sky that day over the Giants’ homeland of forests and long-grassed plains.

The woodland creatures had been underground for weeks. The Giants grew their winter skins and went outside just the same.

All Giants were as strong and stronger than their legends say, though their characters varied; these particular Giants were extremely sensitive to insult.

The clan called Greybar were at war with at least six other Giant clans at any time, most often the nearby Bronzer clan. Birds fly; fish swim; Giants battle.

Bronzer scrolls recount: “Five of we had walked across to the Far Fallen Lake, sharing a tale entirely unrelated to the Neighbors Greybar...

They believed we mocked their armor, which does resemble the oily scales of a fish, and they did pitch their battle against us with haste.”

The Greybars’ chainmail was deadly, beautiful, and exquisitely slippery. Not a Giant, man or beast had ever bested an armor-clad Greybar in wrestling...

Still, a sneer from the likes of Bronzers could not be ignored. The battle would not have been marked at all, so common were their skirmishes, but for the Arrival of the Destroyer that day.

Days into the fighting, the hail began to crust thickly on their winter skins.

The Bronzer and Grey Huntresses grudgingly called a cease-fire so all could break the knobbed ice from their bodies. While thus employed, the Giants experienced a total silence- a cessation of voices or even the whipping wind.

Then a crackling sort of whistle pierced the air from above.

Flashes of pink and gold, fluttering metallic flecks, and a sonic boom loosed along with a small comet’s worth of hail, punching a crater deep into the earth as it landed.

The Bronzer Huntress Lour stepped over the exploded earth and started down into the crater to investigate.

A scream knocked Lour and every standing Giant to their backs. It was a declaration of presence, not fear. It was gleeful and fierce. Most of all, it was powerful.

Lour stood again and shook her armor, now lightly burnt. The Giants were puzzled and curious; they were not often knocked over.

Two more Huntresses entered the crater, and they and Lour walked into the thick smoke. At the bottom, an hour’s trek with no visibility, the three Giants arrived at a clearing in the smoke. The faint light revealed hints of gold on the ground. Greybar Huntress Aor knelt. “It’s an egg,” she called.

“So a beast- a serpent, a bird? It will be back soon for its young,” said Lour. The trio reflexively pulled weapons. The egg cracked. The air split again with sound, vibration both terrifying and musical. A tiny pink head rose from the shell. The being howled a joyful, startling word: “Emraethar!”

The three Giants looked at one another. The creature they beheld was diminutive and quite fluffy. “Emraethar!” it roared again, knocking them sideways.
“Welcome, Emraethar,” said Aor, from the ground. It blinked and purred, rolling in the bits of its golden shell, cackling at the pieces in its fur.

“Let’s bring it to the collection of Clans and decide what to do with it,” said Aor, at last. She rose and slung her bow back over her shoulder. Emraethar chirped and pranced into the smoke. The Giants strode after, struggling to keep up. Above, the Bronzer and Greybar clans had gathered in full.

They nearly didn’t see the little pink creature that ran out of the smoke until it unleashed another of its earth-shaking cries.

“What is this?” asked a dazed Giant, lifting onto his elbows from the ground where the pink thing’s sound had knocked him.

At the rear of the crowd, familiar warning calls brought the company back to their feet and their weapons. The Giants didn’t fear each other, but they struggled against nasty-tempered Brackes, the many-legged beasts both flightless and fierce, with a sweet tooth for Giants.

One had smelled the gathering and started to attack.

The Huntresses steeled to fight, but the Bracke’s face was hidden, a rosy blur enrobing its head. In a moment they saw the Bracke’s clean skull atop its body.

Emraethar dropped from the Bracke’s shoulders, and the enemy beast slumped, dead.

The onlooking Giants were speechless.
“EMRAETHAR!” howled the Pink One. The Huntresses looked at one another. Lour raised her head and cried, “Emraethar!”

“EMRAETHAR!” replied the clans. The creature Emraethar had demonstrated its loyalty and, under the laws of Giants, had sworn himself to them.

(That is, whether or not it had meant to do so; one never really knows what lies in the mind of a murderous and sparkly being born from a comet).

Accordingly, Emraethar became both ward and champion of the Giant clans.

They never saw it eat, but it seemed to derive sustenance from things that shine: moonlight, starlight, and jewels, a pile of which the being hoarded and slept on.

Emraethar never harmed a Giant, but the blood of Giant enemies flowed mightily from its fangs, as written in every legend from the Arrival to the day many years later when the mighty pink Destroyer gathered a diamond necklace around it ears, looked up at the moon, and was gone.
