He was in favor of gun control, at least when he was governor of CA, because the Black Panthers started arming themselves and showing up to events legally armed. King Ron couldn't have that.

Yes that is true, also, he was for gun control until 1980 when the NRA for the fist time endorsed and made a heavy contribution to a presidential candidate. He broke that allegiance in 1994 when he joined Bush in endorsing the banning of assault weapons. He didn't need their money anymore.
