For those that don’t know, Tina Turner has been a part of my life since before I was born. My Great-Uncle, Jimmie Smith was Ike and Tina’s saxophone player from 68-73 so my Mama and family got to meet and hang out with Tina. Seems so unfair lol

-My first memories of Tina start about age 3 and being obsessed with the Private Dancer tour VHS. I watched it everyday and studied her. Eventually my Mama bought me a microphone and stand like hers and added dance mirrors to our game room so I could watch myself perform.

I would also perform for my neighborhood and Mama’s friends. When people came over they knew they would see Marcus do some Tina

-Tina has been on my birthday cakes since about 3 or 4. She was such a strong part of my childhood. Kids at school would tease me and chase me saying “Tina Turner wears a a wig”. 😂😂🤣🤣

At about 10 years old we got in touch with Tina’s assistant through my Uncle and sent a video of me performing “Better Be Good To Me”. We were set to meet her in San Antonio during her What’s Love Live tour but at last minute we had to cancel going because my Dad wasnt feeling well. I was CRUSHED

-My Mama passed when I was 11 and the night of her funeral out of nowhere a Tina Turner concert aired on TV. It felt like comfort from my Mother. Since then Tina’s music and presence is a direct connection to my Mother and now also my Auntie who enjoyed watching me perform.

-Tina’s influence is what led me to pursue dance. We had a cast party after Cinderella the ballet and I did Proud Mary for my dance studio. My ballet teacher Charlee and her mom Mopie immediately put me in the recital with my own feature.

-2008 Leslie wrote my story into Oprah as Tina embarked on her final tour. The Oprah show got in touch with me and was going to have me on via skype to meet her during the show. The day of the airing they cancelled the segment 🙄.
