This is a tutorial on weaving. I hope that if you read this threaded spout you will have a better understanding of the amount of work required to weave and will understand why it's more expensive to buy something handwoven than off the shelf at Walmart.

Here's the empty loom (at my old house).

The yarn that goes on the loom is the warp. I'll be winding it on the warping board. I have 3 colors (green, red, and white) and will wind them separately. You can see the guide string on it now, which I'll follow with the real yarn.

Now I've wound all the green yarn I'll be using. I use clips and ties to keep it organized.

Now I've taken the green yarn off of the warping board and set it aside so I can wind the red and white.

I'm putting this warp on "front to back", which means I start at the reed (the thing in front with the red bars on it. I put 2 threads through each space. I have to count the spaces correctly so the thread goes where it should.

Now I've added the red yarn and am starting to work with the white. The wooden thing with the pegs is called a cross holder and helps keep the yarn in order so there's less tangling.

The next step is threading the heddles. Each piece of yarn goes through its own heddle. There are 480 of them, so it takes time to make sure each one is where it needs to be.

Here's what it looks like from the front now. I wrap the yarn around the front beam so it's easier to manage from the back.

Here's the back view after I've tied on to the warp rod. Now I just have to wind it around until there's just a little left in front.

I got all the yarn wound on the back, and tied onto the front so I'm almost ready to start weaving.

The last thing to do is tie up the treadles. The combination of which treadle I press and how the yarn is threaded on the loom will make the pattern on the woven fabric. That's all set up when the design work is done.

Now I can weave. You see the shuttle there on the left.
It has yarn on it. I press on the treadle, which raises some of the threads, and I push the shuttle through.

Do you think that the colors green, red, and white looks Christmasy? I'm getting a very early start on Christmas towels.

I think it’s so cool that you do this. I’m not that patient:-)

It's more about persistence than patience. I actually find it relaxing, unless I find mistakes. Then there's lots of swearing.
