Earlier today, my aunt Lorraine Bosolet passed away after more than a year of battling cancer. She fought to live with all the willpower that she could muster but in the end the toll that chemo took on her body became too debilitating. The pain too unbearable.

When my grandmother, Rose Bosolet, died 17 years ago, my Titi Lorraine became the family’s matriarch, the glue that held us all together.

A week ago, I was spending time with a few friends in Florida in the hopes of recharging myself when I received an anguished call from my mother about my aunt’s rapidly declining health.

Instead of heading to DC, as I had originally planned, I took a plane back to New York so that I could see my aunt for what would be the last time I would ever see my Titi.

When I entered the hospice, my Titi, pleasantly surprised, lit the room with a joyful spirit.

Although her body was frail at less than 100 pounds, she was beaming with the palpable love of a proud aunt.

Maya Angelo once said: “At the end of the day, people won’t remember what you said or did. People will remember how you made them feel.”

Even in her dying hours, my aunt made me feel loved. She made everyone around her feel nothing but loved: every child and grandchild, every sister and brother, every niece and nephew, and most especially her beloved Bobby.

I doubt I will ever meet anyone who could love as unconditionally—who could devote herself as deeply to the things that matter most, family and friendship—as my Titi Lorraine.

I will miss you, Titi, for as long as I live. And I will never forget how loved you always made me feel.

Such tender hearted sentiment and testimony to what real love feels like Richie. May precious memories of your beloved Titi sustain you in your grief and sadness.
