Its really damaging to maintain commitments with people you distrust. Even if you enjoy them or feel bad tor them. It took me too many years and a cancer diagnosis to learn this.

This made me feel better. I’m 57 and in the last decade I have had at least 4-5 20+ year relationships end. I obviously keep friendships long term- so it’s been upsetting. But every one of the relationships ended because I stopped accommodating intermittent cruelty. Not loudly, but clearly…

…and as a result the former friends involved just couldn’t maintain that way. Even though I’ve said to myself “it’s ok, 50 years old is too old to be in high school” it’s never easy to have a friendship go awry…But it really is ok and my life is better for it- don’t even miss those folks that much
