The first step on USAjobs is finding a job and reading the job description/vacancy announcement to see if you qualify to apply. If you've never been a federal employee before, choose "Open to the Public" to ensure you submit the right application. #ThreadChallenge

If you are looking for a job in HR, search "Human Resources" and you'll likely end up on a job announcement like this for a "Human Resources Specialist". Check the SALARY, CLOSE DATE, and LOCATION to see if it's the right fit for you: https://bit.ly/42hJuOU #ThreadChallenge

Checking the Closing Date of a job announcement is really important. Submit your application AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! Don't wait to the last minute or actual close date because some applications close early after a certain number of applications (e.g. 50, 100, 200). #ThreadChallenge

Review the Duties, Requirements, and Qualifications of the job you want, and tailor your resume to reflect your expertise in each area. DO NOT COPY AND PASTE FROM THE ANNOUNCEMENT! Instead, use this language as a template to create your own resume. #ThreadChallenge

Build your resume in the USAjobs website. You get the option to upload one, but building one in the site works better. If this is your 1st federal job: FORGET WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT RESUMES. Be as profuse as possible and maximize the word limit on each of your jobs. #ThreadChallenge

Consider if federal employment is really for you? The USAjobs website and federal employment/hiring process is arduous, ridiculous, and time consuming. It's a headache, but it prepares you for the administrative minutiae that comes with government bureaucracy. #ThreadChallenge

Keep in mind: If a job is popular, and there's a cap on the number of applications accepted: IT WILL GO FAST! Especially REMOTE JOBS! I've seen 200 max applications disappear in less than 12 hours! That's why it's important to create and save your resume! #ThreadChallenge

Create a SAVED SEARCH. When you save a search, USAjobs will automatically send email updates with any new job that matches what you're looking for. You can have up to 10 Saved Searches and choose to receive them daily, weekly, or monthly via email. #ThreadChallenge

Ultimately, the federal job search, like any other when you don't have "the hookup", is a numbers game! You've got to put in a lot of applications in a very targeted way. The good news is: Staying focused improves your chances! #ThreadChallenge

As you search for your ideal federal job, look for the SERIES, GRADE, SALARY, and LOCATION you want, but be realistic about your prospects if offered a job. If you're new to federal employment: Expect to start at Step 1 of the lowest grade you qualify for. #ThreadChallenge

You can limit your SAVED SEARCHES to SERIES (numbered occupations grouping), GRADE (government's pay scale), SALARY, and LOCATION (even REMOTE ONLY JOBS). For specific keywords, use quotes (e.g. "staffing and placement"). #ThreadChallenge

A NOTE ABOUT REMOTE JOBS WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT: REMOTE JOBS go REALLY FAST when posted, if they're positions people actually want! Also, there are less jobs being offered with more restrictions (e.g. a commuting distance requirement). #ThreadChallenge

Good luck to you in your federal job search, if this is the career path you choose! It won't be easy, but hopefully you'll find it worth it! Feel free to ask me any questions. Keep in mind: I don't have a job to give you or any "hookups"! Your results may vary :) #ThreadChallenge
