"When we identify veggies for a cost-effective garden, we aren’t necessarily discussing the cheapest vegetables to grow. Instead, we’re comparing cost of growing veggies at home to the price one would pay at the grocery store or farmer’s market."

I've got an Italian vegetable garden- tomatoes, peppers, eggplant (sorry, I can only say "veggies" to toddlers). They are the most expensive in the world, with a fence to keep out a woodchuck, 12" plastic tiles (pounded in 9") to stop voles, and floating covers and netting for birds.

I grow my own vegies and fruits for the satisfaction of it, and that I can grow varieties not usually seen at the grocery store. Growing berries, fruits and produce can save money if you freeze or can what you grow.

Heirloom tomatoes and squash are where I save the most money by growing them...

I grew up with a big vegetable garden. My parents always referred to it as growing money.
