Another Californian here. Also, a decent makeshift air purifier can be made using a box fan and a HEPA filter (you can get them to fit the face of the fan). You just put the filter on the part of the fan that draws the air in, and there is a suction created that keeps the filter in place.

Pots of water simmering on the stove or open slow cooker are also good. Air purifiers, air conditioning.
Best of all: Stop using fossil fuels!

I have thought about California so often in the past week (I live in Quebec). I do not know how you deal with this anxiety and fear and worry - nevermind hte smoke! So many evacuations and homes lost, it is heartbreaking.
