Now that this site is working fairly well, time to make my first relatively long post involving music theory! So, chords are the backbone of music. They're not often heard, but they create all the emotion and harmonic movement of a piece whether it's Rock n' Roll, Classical, Jazz, or EDM.

Only one chord progression comes to mind though if we're talking about most used. The I-IV-vi-V is the undeniable king of chord progressions and for good reason. It works for a ton of situations and it just sounds good. Why does it sound good though? Well, that has to do with approach chords.

When you want to hit a certain chord, what you can do is create a chord a semitone or whole tone away from the root of the chord you're trying to hit. In C, G is the V. The IV and vi just happen to be one whole tone away from the V, allowing for a smooth finish with whichever one you start with.

This is why it works so well. It's CUSTOMIZABLE (kinda). Most songs you hear on the radio today use this progression or some modified version of it. The "unique" songs you hear use this as a base and modify from there. It just works, and it's beautiful.
