Always special, though poignant, to see vast flotillas of Velella velella wash up on Baker Beach. These colonial hydrozoans erect a sail to catch the ocean winds, propelling them on their long journeys across the waves.

But like time for us, for Velella the wind eventually conveys them to their doom, stranded on the beach. For us, then, as for Velella, the journey, not the horizon, is the goal.
