Last Saturday, a storm took out a couple of my plants and knocked over the Echinacea. In spite of that, my Echinacea is in full bloom. I will probably start harvesting and drying booms and leaves next week.

The bell pepper and Jalapeno peppers are putting off buds and blooms. I mentioned a #gardeningtips last week about topping. I have never seen my pepper plants this bushy and with this many buds before. I am looking forward to a nice harvest.

I set up a shade cloth over my raised beds and containers to protect against our first heatwave of the summer with over 100°F/38°C temps. I can report that it has done fabulously. Based on the forecast, the end of the heatwave is in sight sometime this coming Thursday.

This is a 40% shade cloth. I found my temp gauge and it appears the cloth is keeping the temps below 100°F/38°C.

My tomato plants were starting to get leaf curl, which is what they do when it is too hot. They curl up to reduce perspiration from the leaves and retain water. After putting up the shade cloth, the new growth is not curling at all.

In addition to no leaf curl, the tomatoes are blooming and none of the blooms have dropped due to the heat.

I planted some French Filet and Contender Buff bush beans. The French filet is struggling to germinate, but I have another week before I call it a loss. These seeds were from the Botanical Interest Memorial Day sale. I planted 16 beans and only 6 have sprouted.

I planted 18 Contender Buff from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange seed I have had since 2020 and I'm getting better than the 86% germination rate they predicted. 16 out of 18 have sprouted. I will fill in the gaps next week when I succession plant another patch.

The Okra is starting to get very large. The leaves are already larger than my hand.

This broccoli plant is done, but I found a baby frog living in it. It is also serving as some kind of trap crop, because the broccoli plant next to it isn't getting eaten at all. Last year, I had a family of frogs & lizards living among my okra. When the okra gets larger, I will relocate the frog.

To help the pollinators during this heat wave, I set out a bowl with rocks and water. I have been sharing my space with some Red Wasps. They like to buzz me first thing in the morning, but then leave me alone.

Something is wrecking my Kale. Probably aphids. I need to spray some BT on them. I try to do that in the evening when the pollinators aren't around. Bt will hurt pollinators and pests alike. That is why it is best to do in the evening when they aren't around.

My big garden chore this morning was to put down some landscape fabric in the container area. I got tired of fighting the weeds and grass. I plan to put more down in my walkway before I put down the pine needle mulch.
