It is not officially summer in NYC until the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. Started in 1983 as a beach homage to Mardi Gras, it is a celebration of art, creativity, uniqueness, diversity, body positivity, and all things ocean culture.

Here are some of the things I saw at yesterday’s parade:

Nathan's is still open. That's amazing. Is Papaya King still open? I loved those hot dogs from Papaya King.

Yes! So is Grey’s Papaya…. I still don’t know how hot dogs and papaya got coupled together though. Hmmmm
