I’ve wondered why it is that the GOP is known as the party of Law and Order even though the Democrats for the past few decades have been doing more policy-wise and legislatively to support policing, the judiciary, and that laws are more equitable and more equitably applied. 1/10

This cognitive disconnect has been even more apparent during the last decade, particularly during and after the Trump administration. The context hit me as I heard an NPR story comparing the FBI’s PR image during J. Edgar Hoover directorship and more recent directors. 2/10

I realized that J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI won white America’s approval because he used the agency to suppress people of color, force the LGBTQ+ community to remain closeted, persecute anyone with socialist ideas as “communists,” and defame political activists on the left. 3/10

Basically, he and succeeding FBI directors through the twentieth century focused their attention on the people that the right disliked. 4/10

I’m not saying that the FBI is a darling of the left by any means, the agency slowly been paying more attention to problems caused by the right: the rise in hate crimes, entrenched racism in police departments, and, of course, the January 6 insurrection. 5/10
