If the purpose of having an Electoral College was to prevent a populist madman from getting elected, well, that is exactly what it enabled in 2016.

It's past time to scrap this slavery-era institution. We should have a national popular vote with a runoff between the top two if no one gets 50%.

Agree

Although Ranked Choice Voting (AKA Instant Runoff Voting) would be a better option

RCV both gives 3rd parties and actual chance and also makes it so their run does not mathematically help elect their worst opponent

Also kills the deliberate spoiler effect (used by RUS w/JStein to elect TFG)

But..... then places where the most people live would have a bigger voice in deciding who wins. One person one vote. There would be no question if 80 million people voted for one candidate and 71 million for the other.
