The artist has assembled the figures of the Erinyes on the left upper diagonal side of the scene, and the figures of Athena and Orestes on the right lower diagonal side. This arrangement drives home the image of the Erinyes, and by extension, the grievous taboo of matricide,

Their outstretched hands focus our gaze onto his fleeing figure. Instead of depicting them as having snakes for hair, they are shown with serpents in their hands which they are using to torment Orestes.
