This session is going to present research on the transition from High School libraries to College/University libraries... I have a feeling I won't be too surprised by the findings. #ALAAC23

82%-88% of those attending rural Ohio High Schools had no dedicated librarian in HS. A librarian usually was the last resort when these students went to college. #ALAAC23

Many students have unfavorable views of using library services. Approachability is a considerable factor. Prefer a person helping rather than a tutorial. Some are overconfident in their own abilities. #ALAAC23

The folks who need the most help from a librarian are less likely to use them. (e.g. BBIMPs, First-Gen Students). #ALAAC23

A limitation of the data is geography. Responses mostly from Columbus and the Cincinnati area. Hardly any from Northern Ohio, so results are not generalizable (though I'm sure there are parallels). The study covers students from both a predominantly White University and one that isn't. #ALAAC23

Even though respondents were primarily from highly funded, a lot of students from families with more money went to private schools, not public schools. #ALAAC23

Learning research *from* a librarian made a difference for more than 50% of respondents. Also... the tiniest bit of research helped made a huge difference. #ALAAC23

Access to librarian help in High School was hit and miss. The Urban/Private and Rural/Small Town/Suburban school divide is palpable. Students are not receiving the help they need in HS. #ALAAC23

College Students in this study usually prefer familiarity over all else. They will ask peers and professors ... even consult the internet ... before they ask a librarian. Consistent with the literature. #ALAAC23

Other things: Gooing through signage and evaluating. Usability testing doesn't have to be complicated either. After about 5 people, you usually start getting repeat answers. #ALAAC23
