I was diagnosed with autism as an adult, in my 30s, and only because I pushed for it. They told me that it wasn't worth the trouble, I shouldn't bother.

Maybe it didn't "get me help" but it did help me to understand myself.

At age 7 my son was the first officially diagnosed member of the extended family. The more we all learned watching him face the challenges our society immerses autistic ppl in as they grow to adulthood, it’s pretty obvious to some of us older family that he should not have been the first.
