Stumbled on this collection of photos that look like Renaissance paintings and thought it too beautiful not to share.

I.

A boy and a man at a table.

A young boy sits at a wood plank table, laying on his crossed arms and looking right at the viewer, while a soft beam of sun casts him in a gentle spotlight. A cluster of green grapes glistens at his elbows, and several old worn porcelain plaits hold boiled eggs. A red linen napkin curls in a swath next to a plate, and a chipped stoneware cup with no handle stands drained. Beside the boy, an old man with a thick grey beard and wizened face looks away, conversing with someone, over a fluted glass bottle of something brown, with an aged sepia label, a robins egg blue bowl of potatoes, and a red bowl of rice. The wall behind them is deep, sea green, worn, and smudged with age. And just above the boy’s head, two copies of the letter “A” have been carved into the green plaster.

II.

A misty country road.

III.

Orthodox Jews after celebrating Purim.

Five Hasidic Jewish men assume various poses around a wall-mounted bench in a wood-paneled hallway. One lays on the black-and-white tiled floor, with his shoulders and head leaned back into the bench, his eyes closed, and his mouth open in perfect sleep. His black, wide-brimmed hat crumples into the legs of a man sitting next to him on the bench, who wears a beige trench coat, knee-length breeches, pageboy cap, and short beard with long curls growing from his sideburns. This sitting man laughs and smiles at yet another man, who stands with his back and long black coat to the viewer. On the other side of the first man laying on the floor, two more men wearing a trench coats, one beige and one black, sit on the bench and lead over sideways, legs sprawled. One wears glasses and sleeps with his head propped on a forearm, and the other wears a different pageboy cap and sleeps with his head arced all the way down to the bench.

IV.

A mountain ravine.

A mountain ravine is mottled with intricate shadows, rocky outcroppings, scrubby plants, and streaky veins of colored stone. The walls of the ravine rise and rise, with countless undulations and cracks, into distant jagged peaks frosted with snow. One wisp of cloud curls over the highest peak in the pale blue sky.

V.

Two pallas cats in the window.

Two shaggy brown-grey cats nuzzle their striped, cropped-eared heads as they sit looking over a raw wood windowsill. Every hair of their silky fur, in countless colors of white, grey, beige, and tawny brown, glistens in the light. Their eyes, a pale shade of amber green, look blissfully content.

VI.

Ice skating In Kinderdijk, Netherlands.

A row of four Dutch windmills line a wide, frozen river that disappears into a foggy golden sunset. Tall, frozen, grassy shrubs line the ice-white riverbank that shines golden, reflecting the sky. A family, one adult, and two children, skate past the windmills towards tiny skaters on the horizon, with their backs to the viewer. One child’s bright red pants stand out vividly against the frosty, sepia scene.

VII.

Ladies in a Chinese garden.

Four women wear silky, pastel robes and gowns, and hold fans beside a shimmering pond. One sits under a large pine and looks down at the water, shielding her face with her fan from the amber-green sunset that cuts under the trees. Two others lean close in a secret chat. The ivory pins holding their shining black hair up, glow in the light. The last, with a triangle clasp in her upswept hair, stands and looks down at the others, holding her fan to her shoulder as she smiles. Below them all, the pond mirrors everything back into the green-gold light.

VIII.

Swimmers run from hail.

A city beach is pelted by hail. The water of the wide, slate-green river is churned into mist by hundreds of hail splashes, as it flows under a highway bridge and meets fog-obscured tower embankments in the distance. A couple wearing swimsuits cling together and cower as they run from the shore across pockmarked sand. And a lone surfer huddles under his board and he high-steps to escape the tide.
