What does the 4th of July mean to me as a Black and Indigenous person?? This country has always wanted all of our rhythm, but none of our blues.

Every year for the Fourth of July, I either read or I listen to James Earl Jones perform Frederick Douglass‘s speech from 1852 asking why they would ever think that their Independence Day was ours too..

You are so not alone. That's become a tradition for me, too. Love that speech. Did you ever hear Ossie Davis do it?? Both of their beautiful, rich booming voices were the perfect delivery🖐🏾❤
