The longer this war goes on, the more Russia is allowed to pull stunts like this and normalize an immoral occupation. The west needs to stop walking the imaginary tightrope of "just enough support so Putin isn't triggered by the loses", as if somehow he's too stupid to have figured it out already.

The true villain here is IGNORANCE. One zealot, going community to community, convincing unsophisticated locals -- with barely enough political acumen to support their tribe and detest its 'enemies' -- to hop onboard the program; w/ no appreciation of how they're building a roaring fascist machine.

I'm guessing you're gonna need a lot more people saying cookie, to get cookie in the cloud, and that lots of cookie in just one post isn't enough to cooki-fy the cloud with cookie

This is so far beyond the bounds of normal, functioning democracy, that I wonder if enough Americans understand. IT. IS. HAPPENING. HERE. Yes, we mean 1930's/40's Europe. We're NOT being hyperbolic -- this is weaponizing government to achieve anti-democratic outcomes. THE GOP IS CAPTURED, AMERICA.

I know Tom is being cheeky here, but what burns is how Trump and MAGA degrade and debase the entire process. The *erosion of democratic norms* is our real enemy; I hate how Trump forces us down too. Even in an imaginary world where Trump had no baggage, skipping a debate should be disqualifying.

Trump/MAGA is an example of broken windows theory. MSM & Congress could've checked him early at low opportunity cost -- like blistering coverage and censure resolutions when he was boundary testing w/ things like trying to tank AMZN stock over WaPo coverage (a brazen etiquette breach at the time).

He'll keep pushing the envelope because he's learned that in general, polite society allows him to get away with it. I can't imagine him getting anything beyond the mildest of sanction, which he'll gladly use stoke the MAGA outrage machine.

Twitter is like the old family house: you REALLY do love it, but you can’t consistently hold renters and can’t ever really get it out of fixer-upper mode. One day along comes a mark offering 2 or 3x its worth and probably in over his head. You take the money, keep your fond memories and run.

I was struck by this same thought listening to the audio. They believe they are on a higher mission -- one that transcends the constraints of laws and norms. They believe the constraints in our system were only in place to serve a hierarchy, and can be discarded when & where they don't serve that.

I think it functions kind of like street cred among those in his fan base who might not be -- let's say -- "sophisticated". Simple grammar mistakes make them feel at home when dosing from his (or MTGs) social media feeds. Plus, it "triggers the libs", so . . .

I understand, but it's important, for many reasons, to stand up even against bad odds. Citizens that don't insist on ethics lose ethical government. Dems that don't fight in red American lose those areas for generations. Pundits that don't drive media narratives lose the chance to set the debate.

The Browns have a 16 yo. who doesn't dress like a future white collar employee, but instead drives a loud, gaudy used car. Joe & Jane bristle that he might fraternize w/ their daughter, and in Nov. they'll vote for the guy posed with an AR-15 in a plaid shirt, who they think 'shares their values'.

I imagine it's difficult to break through tribal resentments (often subconscious). Come tax season, Joe & Jane White might think how that $ could have gone to get the 60" TV instead of the 50" they settled for, and subconsciously resent the Browns down the street they imagine get public assistance.

As disgusting as the TN GOP's expulsions are, what's even more problematic is that there's a constituency for it in the American marketplace of ideas. Our problem is deep.
