One news story suggested that the smoke was caused by the diesel backup generator kicking on, which returned some control to the helm and allowed the pilot to turn the rudder, but didn't restore full control. Life is random, as we see all the time.

Gardiner was were we got our cat, Oberon (the one I just posted a picture of). When my husband was teaching, we would leave SC to spend the summer break there. I was born in Florida, but I want to spend more time in Maine. One day, maybe. For now, Kansas.

I had a little more time with my dad, but my mom died of a stroke in the living room when I was 16. I was 35 when he passed. We have a summer cabin in Belgrade Lakes in Maine, although we are too far away to go there anymore, and will likely sell it. I love it there.

Thank you. Mine did, too. I'm sorry that you also know how it feels. I never had really gotten over it. I wonder if anyone really ever does. My husband seems to have -- he lost his father while he was in college. But I don't know.

My grandmother had beautiful silver hair with a black streak. She wore it long until her last few years (this was some time ago). I have no idea about my mother, as she dyed her hair (just caught my typo) and she died fairly young. And I cut my waist length hair last year. It's growing back.

I tried to embrace mine, but I'm very much salt and pepper, and I just hate it. So, last summer I died my hair a bright magenta. I've mellowed it down since then, so that the grey won't show up as a line as I grow it out, but I'm thinking about teal for this summer.

I am put in mind of Anne Leckie's Ancillary series, with how she played around with pronouns, and how it messed with me at first. I had to spend some time with my thinking.

Do you think robots will adopt the gender binary common in many cultures, a more diverse gender continuum. or simply opt to create one of their own? Or just drop the whole thing so that sex robots will give humans with bias conniptions?

I hope so. I have loved SF/F since Star Trek TOS and Andre Norton (well, technically, Alexander Key, but that's quibbling) so I'm excited about getting into the conversation. But I'll be a lot older than most of the students, and my brain has problems. So, toss up.

I read less loftily, until I don't. I'm taking a class this summer on SF literature (testing to see if my mental health will hold up to try to return to college, to get the MA I've wanted for far too long, just because.)

Current books -- Six Wakes, Legends and Lattes, The Art of War for Writers, and a whole shelf next to my bed. BTW, I saw you are in N Central Florida. I was born in Orlando and spent my last 15 yrs in FL living in Eustis (near Mt. Dora). Left in 2008. Don't miss it, oddly.

OH, I am the same! I have soo many books with markers in them because something new came along and I had to start reading it! House of Leaves is on my list, but currently it is in a box while I wait for new shelves to be built.

Today's word is "hegira" alternate spelling "hejira", which I know mostly because of the Joni Mitchell album. Are you reading anything interesting? I ask because I am very nosey.

I've dreamed for years of having a library of my own. My husband is (very, very slowly) building me one. This is the first shelf. Sometimes I just want to pile my books up and sit on the hoard, like a dragon (or, properly, a bookwyrm).

The buying of move books than one can read is nothing less than the soul reaching toward infinity. I intend to embroider that to hang in my library.

I fell into the dark world of Chinese light novels/danmei/manhua, on top of already flirting with manga and anime and some of those light novels. So now waiting....well, one of them finishes up more or less on the 19th of this month. You'd think I was old enough to know better.

For me it's more book series. I currently have -- against my logical arguments -- have gotten into 5 (FIVE!) stupid but I love them series that have me waiting for each book. TV shows are easier for me to wait on, because I have issues (long, complicated, illogical, superstitious).

One of the reasons I enter any current series with trepidation and often delay gratification until the $%*@ thing is completed. Not that I don't still fall in, but I TRY to resist.
