Awards are a marketing device for the product. The the investors in the product, in this case movies and television, want the marketing boost. The organization that conduct the awards is then able to wield influence over other things. Swag is just part of it. What gets made, who gets what gig, etc,

Between Variety, the Hollywood Reporter, Billboard, and Deadline that is 4 major entertainment industry trade publications. The same way the finance guys consume the Wall Street Journal, the entertainment industry consumes the trade rags.

Thank you! And I totally agree, we need to be looking at the ownership and decision makers, as well as who the targeted demographic is. People tend to overlook entertainment oriented press, especially the trade rags, not realizing the ripple effects they can have over all media.
