I once read a short story in which a scientist who adored Pergolesi's Stabat Mater invented a time machine and brought the composer to the future. He was cured of what killed him, and the narrator imagi Pergolesi would compose more glorious music. I won't spoil the ending, but it is today's choice.

Does anyone else find it coincidental that the only university presidents the Republican-led House Committee on Education and the Workforce has gone after have been women?

Just listened to Shostakovich's Sonata for Viola and Piano. What a wonderfully poignant, reflective work of stunning beauty. #Shostakovich ; #NowPlaying #classicalmusic

Picked up a couple gems at my local record store yesterday. I haven't listened to Genesis much. They're pretty good. Selling England By The Pound is definitely the better of the two.

FWIW, my review on Goodreads of David Vernon's Beethoven: The String Quartets. Highly recommended. My understanding of these great works of music is much more thorough because of this book.

R.I.P. Senator Dianne Feinstein. Broke multiple gender barriers, was a tireless advocate for liberal/progressive causes. May the rest of us learn from your example, both the good and the bad.

Listening to Mozart's string quartets today. I noticed that the Andante in the C Major quartet K. 157 contains phrases that are similar enough to Pachelbel's Canon in D that I suspect Mozart was quoting it.

Inspired to listen to Shostakovich's symphonies by M. T. Anderson's book on the composer and the siege of Leningrad, Symphony For The City Of The Dead. Recommended reading.

Got this set yesterday. I never really listened to Shostakovich much, but so far his 1st symphony is magnificent.

Shostakovich's Intermezzo has a beautiful, if somewhat melancholy feel to it.

Bought this yesterday not realizing I already had Bernstein's performance with the same orchestra. Schipper's interpretation feels a bit more understated while maintaining tremendous tension in the music as he approaches that glorious finish.

One of yesterday's finds at my local used record store. Dmitri Shostakovich died on this day in 1975. Seemed like a good way to remember him.

Don't let the low budget packaging fool you. They may look like bootleg recordings, but these are exquisitely performed and well-recorded versions of Mozarts quartets.
