Over time, much of who the man was and what he inspired has been watered down, with even right-wing racists quoting Dr. King’s words as a cover for what they really believe in (white supremacy and white privilege).

The Monroe Doctrine, crafted by President James Monroe, a founding father who was also a major slaveholder, and expanded by Theodore Roosevelt in his 1905 Corollary, has shaped the history of U.S. invasions and interventions up to this day.

Because forbidden African religious and spiritual practices were masked behind Catholicism during enslavement, African deities were and are still celebrated on specific "saint's days." In the case of Dec. 4, that saint is Saint Barbara, who is the public face of Changó.

I have to admit that when I see Black faces being used by white supremacists to push their right-wing bullshit narratives I get totally pissed. The quislings who actively participate are race-traitors — tap dancing to an ugly tune that ain’t music to my ears. I get even angrier when the tool-fools a

1. I held an informal (and completely unscientific) survey this week, questioning a number of friends aged 45-75—as well as my 44-year-old editor. All of them took Black studies classes in college, and some had women’s studies as well. None of them knew anything about Motley.
